本片以国家科学院人士的更替为主轴，将“文化大革命”和“四个现代化”在陆风起云涌的经过做为背景，时间则历经父母、子女三代，长达二十多年。 《皇天后土》（英语：The Coldest Winter in Peking）是1980年台湾电影，中央电影公司出品，描述中国大陆文革时期种种荒谬情况，出品人明骥，导演白景瑞，编剧赵琦彬、邓育昆，主要演员有秦祥林、刘延方、郎雄、柯俊雄、胡慧中、归亚蕾等等[1]。香港亦有上映，但上映一天即被香港政府禁映，理由为“影响与邻近地区关系”，在1989年香港解禁后重新上映。
