The Thinning se odehrává v post-apokalyptickém světě. Země je přelidněná, a proto jednotlivé státy musely přijít s opatřením regulace populace. Spojené státy americké zavedly unifikované testy pro studenty základních a středních škol. Kdokoliv test nesplní, je eliminován. Dva ze studentů (Logan Paul a Peyton List) texaské střední školy ovšem zjistí, že s výsledky testu je nespravedlivě manipulováno. Otevřou tím dveře daleko větší konspiraci a musí bojovat proti systému, aby podvod dokázali zveřejnit a zachránit sebe i své spolužáky.
