Generál Spielsdorf vezme v ochranu slečnu Marcillu a ta se spřátelí s jeho neteří Laurou. Laura začne trpět nočními můrami, trpí chudokrevností a nakonec zemře. Brzy nato se Mr. Morton se ujme slečny Carmilly a poskytne jí útočiště na svém zámku. Mezi Carmillou a jeho dcerou Emou vznikne intimní přátelství. Podivné je, že Carmille vadí kříž a nesnáší česnek.
